For a mid-sized L-shaped kitchen of 11 cabinets, typical totals are £1,534 at Wickes, £1,634 at IKEA and £1,910 at DIY Kitchens, including VAT. Those totals cover cabinets with doors only, not worktops, appliances, sink and tap, handles, plinth, cornice, end panels, delivery or fitting.

A high total is not always a bad deal. The range, door style and build all change the price, so check the quote line by line before you decide.

What is a fair price for a whole kitchen?

A fair price for the cabinets in a mid-sized kitchen is somewhere in the range each shop charges for the same units. The table shows the cheapest, typical (median) and dearest total for Kuote's 11-cabinet reference kitchen.

What is a normal price for a base unit?

A 600mm base unit with its door has a typical price of £124 at Wickes, £127 at IKEA and £144 at DIY Kitchens. Use the table below as a benchmark for each line on your quote. Prices are the typical (median) price for one unit across all ranges at each shop.

The range changes unit prices a lot. A 600mm base unit costs from £92 to £147 at IKEA and from £110 to £249 at DIY Kitchens. So compare each line with a similar door style, not just the cheapest price.

How do I know if a kitchen quote is fair?

You can check a kitchen quote in about five minutes by comparing it unit by unit with the benchmark prices above. Follow these steps.

1. Split the quote into cabinets and extras. Put worktops, appliances, sink, tap, handles, panels, delivery and fitting on separate lines.
2. List each cabinet by type and width. For example, one 600mm sink base unit, two 600mm base units and three 600mm wall units.
3. Compare each unit with the table. Note any unit priced far above every shop in the table.
4. Compare the cabinet total with the shop totals. Make sure you compare the same number of units in a similar door style.
5. Check what is included. See whether doors, drawer fronts, hinges and soft close are in the unit price or listed as extras.

What if my quote has no line prices?

If your quote has no line prices, ask the supplier for an itemised list of every unit with its type and width. Without it, you can only compare the total, and a total that mixes cabinets, worktops, appliances and fitting can't be checked against the benchmarks here.

Once you have the unit list, you can price the same units at other shops. For the reference kitchen, the cabinets alone come to a typical £1,534 at Wickes, so any extras on your quote sit on top of the cabinet price.

Can I negotiate a kitchen quote?
